Just picked up a 2001 F150 4WD with a 4" lift. One tire was damaged before I got it. The 3 good tires are Goodyear Wrangler DuraTrac 305/70R16 with maybe half the tread left. The oddball is a Nokian 285/75R16. Have been told that running 1 tire different on a 4WD will damage the transfer case. True or no?
Can I replace just the oddball with a new DuraTrac of the same size as the others, or will I need to at least match the tread wear between the 2 front OR the 2 rear tires? Or will I have to replace all 4? I'd prefer to do 1, 2 only if necessary. If I do all 4 I'll probably change to something with less aggressive tread, say maybe a 275/70R16 but I really don't want to spend $800-$1000 on tires right now.
Also, due to the tire size I'm seeing about a 20-25% error on the speedometer. (at 60mph on my gps the speedo says 75mph). Is there a way to correct that? I can't go back to stock tire size because I think it would look weird with stock tires and a 4" lift.
as long as it is not AWD you can run a new and used tire on the front axle as long as you do not do a lot of driving in 4 wheel drive. the rear axle should have tires that are fairly close in physical size though.
all four tires being the same physical size is an all wheel drive thing. not so critical on a 4 wheel drive.
but you want as close as possible on the drive axle.
