I replaced my 2 rear tires on my F150 with a different brand name than my front. The two I had installed were the same size as the front, but they are about 1 1/2" narrower and 1 " higher than my front. All 4 are 145 75R16.
Do you see any problems arising either in 2 or 4wd with wear on the trany or diff?
Are you sure that you dont have 245/75r16's or bigger?
I would not reccomend using your 4wd untill you get 4 of the same size tires...not doing so is a good way to fry a transfer case.
You'll be fine in 2wd, and maybe 4wd in a pinch, but most knowledgable tire shops will not let you only replace 2 tires on a 4wd of any kind for the above reason.
I would not try the 4x4 unless you are in mud or snow. The 1" difference will definately try to bind up the drive train unless the tires can easily slip on the surface.
It is always a good idea to replace all 4 tires at once on a 4x4 because different brands will have a little bit different measurements.
Different brands of the same size tire may vary by .5" at the most but no way would one be an inch different in diameter and 1.5" different in width. Something is not right.

sorry...that's 245/75R16....a slip of the finger...and yes I do have higher tires on the back. Goodyear Wrangler on the front and Hercules on the back. All 4 the same size though. God...what next. not good.
Yes, sometimes different brands will have different size tolerances, thus they can be slightly different in size. I know that firestone and goodyear implement tires with the same numbers stamped on the tires are 1" different in diameter. Had to take the firestones back when I replaced the flat tires on the air seeder. Don't ask me why this is but maybe they behave differently when loaded???
Thanks for the help. Just returned from the garage and had him replace the Hercs with Goodyear's...Now all 4 are the same. Without your help on this tread...I may have been in a mess this winter. Thanks
