'96 automatic blowing fluid everywhere

Another question for ya fellas, my cousing has a '96 F250 (460) with the automatic. I don't know anymore details than that. Anyway, he was up in the mountains yesterday towing a small boat and his transmission locked up. Upon review, he noticed that the fluid was overflowing (from somewhere, said he couldn't tell from where) on to the ground. He ran another rig into the nearest town and asked a local mechanic and was told it may have over-heated and "boiled" over. Suggestion was to let cool, refill and hit the road. Well he made it about 35 miles until it did it again. It is currently being towed down from the hills to the shop. My question is: would this rig have a transmission cooler on it and if so; could it have gone bad thus overheating the transmission and "boiling" over? Not sure if transmission fluid boils but I think I understand what the mechanic meant. Neither my cousin or I pretend to be mechanics but I am just curious from an educational stand point.

If the cooler is plugged by debri from the transmission then yes it could cause a overheat concern like the one you are discribing. If this is the case, then your torque converter could be damaged by the heat by now.
