1987 E-150 overheating and slipping C6

Hello again,
I have another problem should we be able to get my van running again. My van is always running in the red zone and it boils over going through hilly country.

This van has an inline 6 and a C6 automatic. I think the overheating has partially to do with the C6. The van has run hot for atleast 6 years (50,000 km) but it never boiled over before the slipping started. The rad does have deposits in it but the coolant is new. It used to be able to spin the wheels on pavement from a stop but now it grabs briefly and slips a touch while taking off. 2nd is fine. The first shift from 2nd to 3rd is wild...I go in and out of gear if I hold my foot to the floor but eventually it gets into 3rd and no more problems after that. If I drive the van normally I can't tell I have a bad transmission unless I am loaded down.

I have changed the transmission oil (Canadian Tire brand) and set the bands since this problem came up. The bands were not out of adjustment if I recall correctly. I changed the transmission filter 6 years ago when I got the van...it was the first change because I found that white plug thing.

One last issue is that I just noticed I need new spark plugs...does that cause over heating? I get horrible mileage...about 10 US MPG, I've gotten as bad as 7 with a big load and a trailer.

Hopefully I have given enough information. Any suggestions?

Thanks, Steve

I noticed that the modulator valve hose is soacked right through with tranny fluid. I'll change the valve and see where that gets me.

Do all fords have this problem? I had to change one of these on my brothers Explorer too.
