2002 5.4 Coolant Operating Temp

What should I be seeing? I've got the Torque app on my phone and a Bluetooth transmitter hooked into the OBD II port and it shows it typically at 176 to 180 degrees, with a max of 185. Is this right, or should I be replacing the thermostat? What should normal operating coolant temp be?

Thanks!

LOL....I'm WAAAAY too old to understand what you are doing. Old school....what does the gauge read when it is fully warmed up and how hot does the heat blow?

The guage is really a glorified idiot light with no numbers on it, just a C and H for cold and hot, respectively. It shows just below the halfway mark when fully up to operating temperature. The Torque app gets its data straight from the engine computer, which gets it from a sensor. The heat gets warm, but it is just adequate. It never gets hot.

My Jeep, on the other hand, gets hot enough to run you out, even with a soft top on in the middle of winter, but it's heat is hotter than Mos other vehicles, anyway.

I'll get and post data for it and my other vehicles and will post it. I'm thinking I'll see something north of 190 degrees.

The gauge is accurate for the most part. Slightly below half is correct. If you put in a cooler thermostat you would see the gauge reflect lower at full warm up.....I have done it. As far as the heat goes, how do the hoses feel going into the heater core....both nice and hot....both just warm.....or one a different temp. than the other..?

My Mercedes was in the same temp range, so maybe it is fine. I'll be checking heater core hoses next.

The correct full temperature range is 195 +/- 5.
Good luck.

Then I think a thermostat change is in order.

Thanks Bluegrass and everyone else!
