I figured they reset it, but if it was bad wouldn't it throw the same code again. And I still have warranty but they said its not covered ??? First they tell me anything diesel related is covered, but this sensor is not covered, is it not diesel related ??

Did they run the base part number (9D378) to confirm it isn't covered?
I have 80k miles my warranty ends at 100k. Mike I don't know if they ran the base part number are you saying it was an update, recall type thing they were changing for free ??

What warranty? Diesel, drivetrain? Some extended warranty?
Unless u have extended the emissions ends at 50 or 60k miles

Okay, so you've expired on mileage. There were a few of the earlier model years that would randomly sent NOx sensor performance codes. As a result, they were updated somehow (don't ask me how), which resulted in a changed up part number to go along with and updated PCM calibration. And no this wasn't a recall.
They told me I am covered for anything "diesel related " till 100k. So if the CEL doesnt come back on should I still change the NOX ?
Just because the "Check Engine" light doesn't come back on, doesn't mean there isn't a DTC set. For what it's worth, the particular truck I had a similar issue with, was resetting that particular DTC after a few miles of driving it, after it was cleared before the DTC would come back (but the "Check Engine" light didn't come back on right away). As far as whether to change out the sensor or not, I would just for peace of mind. Be glad that your truck is a '12 model year with only one NOx module and one NOx sensor. The '13 to current model years now have two (NOx sensors and NOx modules).
thanks mike, I'll swap it out and should I look for the updated part number you posted, also how are the 12's with the egt sensor issue, should I keep a wrench and spare sensor in the truck with my scanner ?
And just to throw a wrench in the works, what is involved in removing that section of pipe and doing away with the NOX and EGT sensors ? Is it very expensive, do I have to get rid of EGR too, need special tuner etc. etc. ?

I carry a couple of EGT sensors and the NOX sensor in my truck, with tools.
getting a delete pipe isn't too bad, couple hundred dollars..
but you must have a tuner to tell the computer that the sensors are 'good',
and to turn off the failsafe regen (will regen about 600 miles if it thinks the sensors are lying)..
tuner + delete pipe is ~ $1300-$2000
on ebay search ford 6.7 delete.. there are of course other places to get things.
Ok swapping out my NOX sensor this morning, can I reset the CEL by disconnecting batteries, and if so do I have to disconnect all the terminals or just the ground etc. ? I havent had time to set up my scan tool yet to reset !
