I ran without one once and saw no problems. But it could affect the starter engagement depth.
I was able to start the truck without any issues but I don't know over time what may happen I have recently just install the c6 in this truck and I realized that the plate wasn't there so don't know if I should pull it back out and put a plate in or leave it together and hope for the best
If you loosen the bolts (nuts) that hold the convertor to the flex plate, you should be able to move the convertor back a little. I'm not sure what the spec is but I'd guess at least .040-.050" to allow for heat expansion and possible ballooning of the convertor.
Be aware the lock nuts that are located on the converter studs that retain the flex plate should not be reused.

yes you should use the transmission to engine spacer plate . It is intended to insure a margin of clearance for not only the converter to pump but also the input shaft of the transmission inside the converter .
well I broke down and did it I went ahead and put that spacer in it wasn't as bad as I thought only took me about 3 hours I thought if you're going to do it you might as well do it right thanks for all the help everybody
