Not really sure what you're trying to do but pulling the entire dash board to look at a few vacuum lines isn't necessary. If I translate your goals the function control (Heat, Vent, Floor, Defrost etc) can be serviced or inspected by removing the two pieces of trim surrounding the instrument cluster and radio bay.

From there its just three bolts holding the control & switch block to the dashboard superstructure which I think you're trying to access?

Try this:

you need a right angle pick and push in on the tab, it's were there is a small gap when you pull the switch out and rotate it. put your pick there and press on the metal clip, it will pull off.

That's a pretty slick trick--I've always just released the entire stem when removing that side of the dash trim. Being old school I never thought to remove just the ****.

Karsten there is a threaded projection or trim part screwed into the metal backing plate for the H/L switch. After the **** or stem is removed that needs to be unscrewed before the dash trim can be removed.

I can post a photo later this day if needed.

Okay Karsten hopefully these photos will help. Keep in mind this is how I do it, have been removing the typical headlight main switch this way for years and years.

First this button is what you're trying to acess:

(Photo shows the switch as found mounted in the dashboard, same orientation.)

Accessing that button can be tricky. Most times I've already removed the left side lower trim panels which makes this a bit easier. Snaking your hand upwards you'll eventually find the main switch housing---feeling around a bit more will locate the button.

With the stem and **** already pulled all the way out depress that button which releases a lock allowing you to pull the stem & **** all the way out of the switch.

Here's my hand on the H/L switch ready to press the button:

(Photo can't display in correct orientation due its size--sorry.)

There will be a bezel or trim piece or whatever its called that screws onto the switch body---it resembles a plastic bolt for lack of a better description. This will easily thread off the switch. Its important to remove this as it helps hold the far left side of the dash trim tight to the dashboard superstructure.

Depending on your chassis year there are either one or two pieces of dash trim---I think '99 was the last of the two piece arrangement. In either case just above the speedo gauge there are two 7 or 8 mm hex head screws holding that part of the dash trim to the dashboard. They're pointing upward, somewhat recessed and mostly out of sight unless you're looking for them.

Set the emergency brake, turn ignition switch to on or run and move shift lever to its lowest point. (If you have tilt wheel lower it all the way too.) Now you're ready to gently but firmly tug at the dash part so its retaining clips pop out of their catches.

IF you have the single piece dash trim you'll need to remove the radio and be very, very carefully as this piece is pulled away from the dash superstructure. Lighter and power port wiring can be carefully disconnected which allows this piece to be set aside.

DON'T Forget to reinsert the head light switch stem and ****--if not they'll stay on until you do.

Any questions lemme know----hope this helps.

Thanks a lot ! That clears things up for me. Thankfully I have a '98 with the 2 piece dash. Seems I gonna break my hand 2-3 times and do some sneaking

A Happy NEW YEAR to all of you !
