it's cold outside so i didn't spend a lot of time trying to chase it down before replacing the resistor. I just got under there, unplugged the old, plugged in the new and tested it on all speeds for a second with the new resistor just hanging from the harness. everything worked, so i swapped them out. I wouldn't do that for very long though as the resistor needs the airflow from the blower to keep from overheating.
a tip for anyone that needs to change it out: drop the glove box door and get at it from that. it's a direct shot and super easy to get at with the glove box door out of the way. I tried it from the bottom but getting under there is near impossible.

I believe you can do that on the newer models, but older models have a backing behind the glove box that is in the way.
