Steering upgrade '76 HB

Working on my 76 HB and getting ready to do the steering upgrade. I looked on partsgeek.com and saw that I could get a reman '78 powersteering gear box and pump with resevoir.

Is there any reason not to do this?

JY's arent really an option where I live, its possible but unlikely i will get what I need.

I have a 76 myself. I'm not sure about your question but I'm trying to see if mine has the upgrade already or not. Would you or anyone else have a picture of the stock 76 steering? Thanks!

You cannot use a 1978 or newer Ford P/S pump on a 1965/76 w/an FE engine.

The 1978 and later pump has a plastic reservoir, the P/S pressure hose connects to the pump w/a qwik connect fitting.

The FE P/S pump mounting brackets will not fit this pump, as it's a different shape and smaller in diameter than the steel reservoir Ford pumps used 1965/77.

P/S pressure hose threads onto the 1965/77 steel reservoir pumps.

Thanks....so I can use a 77 pump with a 78 gear box or the pump I have currently from the Power assist? and will the 77 pump mount to the bracket I have now or do I need to fabricate a new bracket?

Use the P/S pump your 1976 has now. FE engines were cancelled at the end of the 1976 model run.

If your pump is bad, you can use a 1965/1977 car or 1966/77 truck pump, but not a 1978 or later car/truck pump with the plastic reservoir.

I will do that, thanks. My pump is still good, can I use the lines for the 78 gear box?

Your present Power Assist P/S hoses will work just fine.

The late 1977 F250 4WD (not a High Boy), 1978/79 F250 4WD & 1979 F350 4WD Ford/Saginaw P/S gearbox is similar to:

1969 F100/250 2WD & F350 from serial number D96,001, 1970/79 F100/250 2WD & F350, 1976/79 F100/150 4WD & Bronco.

btw: Where in AK are you?

If you go this route be advised that you may need to do some fabricating and welding to make this setup work. Use the search function and it comes up with swaps that FTE members have done on Highboy trucks. There are photos of the newer style power steering with some details of fabrication that was needed for newer steering gear to work properly. Good luck with the swap and post up some photos and details if you go this route. It is a good replacement for a manual or power assist setup. The other thing to consider with this setup is it's currently for a push /pull style like the original setup. This box has also been used for cross over steering with some modification for a different pitman arm and cross member modifications & drilled/tapped passenger steering knuckle. There are several complete kits but the cost are expensive IMOP. It must be a challenge for anything when way up North. I'm not saying that this is a bad idea for you to try or being a negative type FTE member. Just some friendly input for ya.

The welding and fabrication part is easy for me, I am a welder\fabricator. I have seen the pictures and have my own twist on mounting the gear box. I will do crossover steering this summer once i get the power steering sorted out.

I know where North Pole is, driven past the big Santa statue on the main drag.

The fellow that owns Hector's Welding is an FTE member (and a pal of mine).

if your gonna pony up the money to do the swap do yourself a big favor and get the steering box from redhead steering gears in washington state. what they do to the old boxes is awsome and worth every hard earned cent.
