What happens after the initial start & die (with subsequent attempts) ?
Was there any CEL light on ?
What miles on the odo ?
Any recent repair ? spark plug & coil changed ?
"Could it it be the idle position sensor? "
Do you mean IAC valve ? (Idle Air Control valve )
Has around 75k miles on it. No recent repairs. No check eng. light. Took it to Ziebart for its yearly check up drove it back to the shop ran fine. Tried to start it the next morning would start and die after 2 or three seconds.
We have no lead to follow . If I were in same situation , I would check two things first . 1- Do we have spark at spark plugs ( remove one coil & plug , ground it . You should have spark when cranking). 2-Do we have fuel pressure at fuel rail( buy/borrow a fuel gage and see if you have at least 30-35 psi fuel pressure while cranking). . Also I would hook up an OBDII gauge see if there is any pending codes that might help us . These will give you a starting point . Good luck,
I've got a similar issue with my 2000 Ex at 138K. Only acted up when cold out, then fine the rest of the day. Checked fuel pressure and replaced the fuel filter. Talked with a friend and we decided it was probably intake gaskets. Replaced the intake gaskets (there were definitely a couple of cylinders where the gasket had torn). Still acting up most cold mornings but I can usually get it to stay running if I feather the accelerator a bit. Sometimes it will pick the idle back up on its own. No check engine light and no pending codes.
Sounds to me like something got disconnected. Check all electrical connections like IAC, mass air meter, even injectors. While you are at it, look at all vacuum connections. I would probably go ahead and clean the IAC and the mass air meter while I was at it.
That would be my guess also. What ever you had them check for a yearly thing I would check all the areas they could of possible left something not connected so well.
