Ford Durango

I just got a copy of "Ford Pickup" (color History)by Tom Brownell, got to pretty much the last few pages (on Rancheros) and come across the write up on this "Durango" thing, built by National Coach Corp. on Ford Fairmonts & Mercury Zephyrs, has anyone ever seen one of these vehicles?? Anyone HAVE one??

I thought they only made about seven Durangos and then called it quits--at least over here. But in Australia I believe they continued making them and also, more recently, made a Ranchero type vehicle off the Escort platform (but forget about it, that one is front wheel drive). Nice thing about the Fairmont was you could still get a straight six in those days.

So does that mean Dodge just stole the name? Isn't that copyright infringement?

The article in the book says things were bad at Ford then & only 120-211 of these Durangos were produced, they can't seem to be more specific than that, they also state that plans were to build a GT version, but that never happened.
As for the fact of Dodge taking the name for its current SUV, I think I've heard somewhere that a certain number of vehicles have to be made under a certain nameplate for a manufacturer to copyright the name, & it sounds as is Ford fell way short of expectations on it.

That's pretty neat looking. It does look just like a Fairmont but with a Ranchero style pickup bed. What a neat vehicle that must be to own, being so rare.
