Anyone know of a company that produces heavy duty ATV basket style racks at a reasonable price? Online would be prefered, I did a search and the best I found was 16 gauge. What I am looking for should be about twice that heavy, like 1/8 inch. I've looked at all the local dealers and all they have is light weight racks starting about $250. Ouch.
I think you are going to have a hard time finding what you what. The trend in ATV's is to go with the high impact plastic. From what I've seen that stuff is pretty good. Either front or rear "baskets" that can hold nearly anything. The challenge will be finding one that can fit your application.
A friend just bought a Bombardier (SP?) 600 and we noticed the foot rests are metal but completly supported by plastic. He's a big guy, I sure hope they hold up. Maybe I'll give it a go at just making one. thanks.
I ride a Bombardier DS650. And if they put the same quality into your friends bike, as they did with the DS, then your friend won't have anything to worry about. I'm more than sure that he won't have a problem. They are a big company, they make Ski-doo, Sea-Doo, Lear-Jet, and many high speed trains. Their quality is second to none!
on my 2002 yamaha big-bear 400 i just took some u-bolts and mounted a little tool box to the factory rear rack. works nice, i can fit a lot of stuff in it.
in your case what i would do is buy the material you need, talk to someone with a welder and custom make your own, you can probably do it dirt cheap, and if your good with metal you could make it look pretty decent too, made to fit your needs
I did build one yesterday, 1/8 inch all the way around. It should hold up.
Then the wife decided she needed a bike rack, so now she's cool with the welder I bought the other day
About 25$ for the steel, I bought more than I needed because it's handy to have around. I'd guess time wise about 4-5 hours, I didn't work on it straight through so I not real sure.
