so im in need of a new clutch especially since some 175 80% pis injectors are going in soon. iv been looking at the luk clutches but it seems you need to buy there flywheel? and the valair clutches seem to be in my price range but i dont really want a full ceramic clutch that is rated at 600hp and deal with the hopy hopy on the start, or the kevlar???. my power range goal is around 375hp to 400hp at the wheels. so i really dont want to go with the organic clutch and be pushing its limits all the time. im looking at 500.00 dollars or so to spend on the clutch. south bend seems to be out of the price range being as they start at around 800ish for a decent clutch that will hold up.
im still confused as to what fly wheel my truck has, iv read i have a solid flywheel and a dual mass flywheel. and do i need to run the luk flywheel with there clutches or will the clutch fit the stock flywheel. and i havent found a good place to look at the luk cluches that explain a whole lot about them, including what hp they will hold up to. would love some imput on any of this and kind of a point in the right direction. maybe some first hand experience with a clutch that is in the 500.00 price range that will hold up to 400 or so hp at the wheels, that is street and tow friendly. and preferably no harder to push in than the stock clutch.
thank you all for the imput in advance. also the truck is an 01
Valair, Luk, Southbend..... Those are the popular choices for the heavier clutches. Like you said, the more grabby they get, the more hoppy they get. Decide which brand you want and then go with whatever flywheel set up they recommend.
You have a solid flywheel. The OBS trucks are the only ones that had a dual mass flywheel. If you have a super duty, you don't have dual mass.
ok that is what i read but others say some superdutys do.?? thats the thing i dont see that valair needs a different flywheel, but i dont want to buy a valair clutch and take the tranny out and find out i need one, but i can get a luk locally it sounds like threw auto zone, so i was wondering if i need there flywheel or not? it sounds like i do but i havent found much on this and would hate to spend more money than i have to.
The real question is how long have you been running those injectors and how have you been treating the existing clutch? Is the flywheel heat checked?
You could get the existing flywheel machined or replace it if it comes to that, but the ZF-6 didn't come with a dual mass flywheel so you don't have to worry about that aspect.
i couldnt tell you about the clutch i just bought the truck 3 monthes ago from the original owner. it was stock as stock could be besides a leveling kit. i havent put the injectors in yet they are my next purchase as soon as my car sells. i just sold my super cab 00 auto, and bought this 4d lb (needed room for my new twin boys).
does anybody elce have some more imput on wether or not valair will work on a stock flywheel. i found a luk ceramic clutch kit with flywheel for around 450 from rock auto. and does are clutches rated for flywheel hp (i would guess so) or rear wheel hp? thank you i really need some imput because i need a clutch bad
