351m timing adjusting

Hey there boys, I am about to embark on a 1700 mile adventure on the way home for Christmas in my old Ford. I'm driving from Texas at low elevation to Idaho at a higher elevation with Colorado and Wyoming higher still elevation in between. When the truck was first driven to Texas 4 years ago I adjusted the timing a little depending on where I was to keep the engine running good and not pinging. My question is which way do I turn the distributor to advance or retard the timing? I can't for the life of me remember which is which. Thanks for the help!

Have a safe trip, Cy. And, tell us a bit about your truck.
