Timing advancement

Another newbie question.

I should turn the distributor to the right to advance the timing and to the left to retard, right? And when I do adjust it I should only turn it slightly for each adjustment, correct? About 2deg. each time?

Assuming you can move the distributor (that's a big assumption on M engines that have had the distributor installed for a few years, they tend to 'freeze' in place) then moving it clockwise advances the timing, CCW retards it. Yes you should move it in small increments.
