I have a 1990 Bronco 5.0/AOD which I gave to my father a few months back since I bought my 91 F-150. The problem is that it (the Bronco) wants to die at idle. Of course it idles to low- I encountered the same problem when I bought it and to make a long story short the timing was @ 5 degrees BTDC and when I advanced the timing it cured my idle problem. My question is: Shouldn't the IAC control the idle no matter what or should I open the throttle and reset TPS? I am also thinking it may be time for a new IAC valve- yes/no? I am open to sugestions. Thanks for your time.
Disconnect the IAC when the truck is running, provided it will stay running. If the truck dies, the IAC is OK. If it keeps running, IAC may be bad or need cleaning. Cleaning the IAC and throttle tubes and plenum is easy...just use solvent labeled for this from auto parts store. Some say regular carb cleaner is too harsh, but I don't if there's any difference between the two. Also might want to run codes first to see if the TPS code is there. That, too, could be the culprit. I think the web site to learn how to get/troubleshoot codes yourself is http://www.dalidesign.com
Good site. Teaches you how to pull codes with just a jumper wire and the check engine light. Real handy to know.
Hey thanks, I've never pulled codes before and it's high time I did. I'll keep everyone informed on what I find when I get back home in about a week (in New Mexico on business- Yuk).
