I'm looking for a first vehicle for my son and was wondering how good this one would be. 2000 Ford Excursion Limited, $8,977 - Cars.com
How reliable would the excursion be with this mileage and age? Also heard that the v10s that were made around this particular year had spark plug issues.
Looks like a decent truck Dan. V10 is reliable, but thirsty. Plan on 10-12mpg. Spitting plugs are no problem if plugs are installed correctly. I'd check out the front steering components for wear. Likely those will need some attention. See the Tech Forum section at the top of the Ex forum for details if you haven't already. There might even be a 'used V10 what to look' for thread there.
Thanks for the replies guys, I guess I overreacted a little on the dependability of the v10. He would only really be driving it to school which is only about 5 miles away. Also would I be wrong in assuming that the excursion would be good for road trips to florida with all of its room and comfort?
Dan, I think those long trips with the family is where the Ex really shines. Comfy, good view of the road, room for all your stuff. Ex for a teenager? For sure safe, but I'd make 'em walk when the weather is nice (but I'm old Skool and walked up hill both ways back in the 60s- so poor couldn't afford shoes- so in the winter wrapped barbed wire around my bare feet for traction...)

I'n thinking that your on to something here...maybe just by him a nice pair of shoes and make him walk ...If I may ask another question why an ex over a suburban, yukon xl, or escalade esv???

Preference.
4wd EX is solid axle leaf spring front, it's a truck.
IIRC, the GM variants you mentioned are coil sprung independent. Softer ride.
There were very few 3/4 ton Burbs and Burb cousins produced. I was recently informed that GM no longer produces the 3/4 ton Burb.
Interior fit and finish in the same MY FORD v GM and you will find your answer.
And finally, if you buy a GM you won't have very much fun on this forum.
Ok, how many more miles could I expect to see out of would you guys say?
With normal maintenance (assuming there is nothing wrong with the truck now) you should get 300K + miles. Keep it out of salt, if you want it to last.
Remember these trucks are anywhere from 10-15 years old, the engine may be excellent but all the surrounding parts are still 15 years old, switches, relays, regulators, alternators, belts, springs, seals, bearings, get the idea?
Now, buy the truck and we will help you spend your money.

Spending other people's money is what we do best around here!!
Don't listen to a diesel guy talk about spark plugs, he's been smelling too many fumes! wpnaes gave ya the right answer. With only 74K on the truck, I wouldn't touch em.
Don't mention buying that truck to any of my kids, I'm not that generous of a dad!

Well, I'm tired of the son borrowing my truck and I wanted to get him something with 4wd for winter, saftey, and reliable. Also needed something to drive down to florida for vacations so this presented a excuse to get a nice road trip vehicle like the ex.
My first vehicle was a 2003 V10 Ex 4x4, learned to drive in an Ex. Would not have wanted anything else.
My parents wanted something that they knew if I got in an accident I would be okay. Also, the Ex wasn't the definition of a speedster so they wanted to limit me that way... My dad always said he couldn't put a price on safety, so the Ex was the way to go in his opinion.
