Your dad is a very wise man and I believe that I will be going down the same road for my son

Also I want to add that my dad has plenty of money. Not talking about LivingLarge money, but pretty close to it. So don't think it was a "It's all we could afford" kind of thing. Had I chosen to go down a less righteous path and follow in his footsteps he would have given me anything. I chose to be a good person and stay as far from his ways (legal as they were) as I could. My little brother had a Viper last year... paid for by my dad. He was kicked out of the Army for punching an officer in Iraq. My dad loves that little ****-up.
Sorry, I didn't mean to stir up something like that

Wow... reading back over that I didn't realize you had but damn... I retract what I said. My dad was 100 pounds of **** in a 2 pound bag. Get something your son can be proud of and will protect him. Personally I think it's a little to much truck for a teenager but part of me is also jealous I hope you find the EXACT Excursion you are looking for and you both are happy with it

My only concern with your plan is my memories of my wife and I in the front seat of a 65 GMC. We didn't have kids until 3 years after we were married but at that age the EX would have been like having an apartment. LOL Otherwise it looks like a great vehicle. It could be a great project for the two of you. The EX has somethings that need upgrading to make it a completely awesome vehicle. New leaf springs, shocks, tires. All kinds of mods if you look through the forum. My youngest daughter bought an 87 Chevy pickup and we're fixing it up. Great way to spend time together.

You make a very good point there...he's gonna be gone in just a couple years so whatever I can get is good money spent

My daughters first car was an Explorer, 13mpg. It was ok for going to school 3 miles away, work at 5 miles. 2 years later shes going 40 miles one way, 4 days a week for collage. After a year she sold the Explorer and bought a 4 banger Toyota.

As for trips, my wifes car gets 35 mpg but we take the Ex every time.

How readily available are parts for the early exes? Just asking cause I read that they are becoming harder and harder to find, which I assume also means more expensive

What parts do you mean? A lot of parts can just be ported over from F250s/F350s of the time, so there should still be plenty of parts kicking around. And as more and more die junkyards normally have lots of parts.

I think the article meant just parts in general. The guy was arguing why a suburban over an excursion...he said parts would be around forever for a suburban, but not so for the ex.

I guess it would depend on the year suburban you would be getting... As they get older, just like the Ex, parts are going to become more and more scarce I assume. Even though suburbans are still in production, as model years are upgraded so are components; an older suburban might pose just as much as a problem parts wise as an Ex as time goes on in some respects.

That's the shame of old cars/trucks I guess
