So here's the deal, I bought a billet aluminum pulley kit for my 400 Cleveland not knowing that it was in underdrive kit. After some research I found it's really not that big a deal as long as I get 100 amp alternator and a high flow water pump, which I planned on doing already. My build is mild street performance and there is no air conditioning. Is there anything that I should be concerned about with this underdrive pulley kit? And it came with crankshaft, water pump, and alternator pulleys. I still have to purchase the power steering pulley. This is for 1977 F250 using the old style steering pump. Is there anything specific I should be looking for when purchasing a billet aluminum pulley for it? Thanks for your expertise guys
I have used a moderate underdrive with a warmed up hot cammed engine. With increased idle speed and redline, it basically keeps the WP and alternator speeds in the intended stock range. Works great in that application.
If you are running a near stock engine or at least near stock RPM, the underdrive may lead to cooling and charging problems. If that's the case, clean up and a coat of Rustolem on the originals may work much better.
