Troyer sells a 2 pulley set (crank and water pump) while BBK and many others sell a 3 pulley set,and include an alternator pulley.
Why would I want or not want the alternator pulley? The Troyer set is a few bucks more, which is acceptable if it is a better arrangement. I've seen many discussions in my search concerning underdrive pulleys, but nothing concerning this issue.
You must understand a slower alternator charges less and can become an issue under some circumstances such as light use at night and A/C use or anytime large drains are ocurring as well as the battery at times may not get fully recharged.
These are Race items not really meant for common road use.
You use them and put up with the possible results.
It's not a matter of why they are offered but one of a Biz selling these items to make money.
You buy at your risk.
The factory designed the puilly ratios to work trouble free under all conditions.
Good luck.
I think that the alternator pulley that usually comes with is sized to make up for the difference in alternator speed that you get with the smaller crank and water pulley. In other words, it makes up the difference so that the alternator charges the same as it did with stock pulleys all around. So the three pulley set might be a good option.
That being said, I think most of the engine drain comes from the alternator anyway, so by getting it back up to speed you might just be undoing what your wanting to do in the first place. If I recall correctly, Troyer states on his website that you only need to hit something like 800 rpm before the alternator is charging at the same rate as at idle? So unless you've got huge power drains while just sitting still and idling, there shouldn't be a problem.
