I got a 2000 F250 7.3. I started having problems as soon as i bought the truck, but lately I am stumped. One night I drove it, and the dome light came on and stayed on, even after shutting it down. We ended up pulling the fuse. Well later i was driving it and the battery light came on, i assumed alternator. Went and bought a new on, went to put it on and had a giant arc. Something is shorting out my system, it caught my fuse panel on fire an melted. I am running out of places to look for a short. Any suggestions would be great.. Thanks
Well the interior lights staying on I would think it is the switch in the a door latch or your GEM unit. But with the other issues you are having I think it is the GEM unit that is mounted on the back of the fuse box. These trucks are known for the windshields leaking and the water runs down the drivers side post and on the fuse box and gem and can short it out. I would pull the fuse box/ GEM and check for corrosion and check for wiring issues. Hopefully no one has cut up the wiring harness to add stupid stuff. Also pull the drivers side post trim and take a hose or pressure washer to the windshield on the side and on the top. If you look at your roof on the drivers side there is a roof seam and in that area of the windshield is where it would leak or at least it does on mine.
I have pulled the fuse box, no burnt or corroded wires. Where it melted in the fuse panel, i tried to pull the wire and redo it, but couldnt get it out. So i just cleaned it up. I'm new to the diesel so I don't know what the gem is. I've looked everywhere I could possibly think for a short. I found one on the bed rail. Fixed it. Pulled the bed off and can't seem to find any more. I found another open wire under the alternator. Fixed that. My windshield isn't leaking water into the fuse panel, it isn't leaking down the windshield rail.
I still owe on this truck, and would love to drive it instead of selling the ol'hog....
Thanks for your efforts. But still no luck.
Look at the point where the Engine Compartment Wire harness, connects to the Cab Wire harness.
That's supposed to be sealed to keep out moisture. But in the Seattle area and some other places on the coast, Salt water got in that big connector and corroded the Terminals.
Electrical problems can be a pain, but you can do it. Take your time. There is an electrical forum to try too. The last owner must have had problems.
There is a way to tell if there is a sort by hooking a multimeter to the battery cables. Somebody else will have to chime in on that since I don't remember it exactly. I would pull all the fuses except what is needed to run the truck. Hook up the meter and see if the short is in that system. If not put one fuse back in at a time until you find which system it is in. I did it on my father's van. It turned out to be one of the lights in the raised roof. I am making an assumption you can do the same thing with these trucks. My father's was a gas truck from the 80s. I am by no means an electrical expert. So take my suggestions with a grain of salt.
