Serpintine Belt Squeaking

My engine started squeaking when it cooled off below 80 this fall. It sounds like a bad bearing. I checked all the accessories with a hose pipe stethoscope and pressure with a screw driver and none seamed to be the source of the noise. I dripped some water on the belt and the noise stopped. The belt has 1000 miles on it and the alternator has 500 miles. The squeaking is getting better with time and is loudest above 1800 rpms.

I did not see any alignment pins when I replaced the alternator, just the three oversize bolt holes. All seams to be aligned and turning full speed. The power steer pulley is slightly warped but it has always been that way.

Is belt dressing a good idea or should I just carry a spare belt?

You sure its the belt? Mine does this also when its cool, usually goes away about the same time the cold idle kicks off. Been too lazy to investigate, just assumed its probably the idler.

I changed my belt and the idler last year and mine still has a squeak when its cold. I asume it's the tensioner pulley.

A couple of drops of water on the belt will completely silence it for 10-15 seconds. My tensioner is stiff. I need a 1/2 breaker bar and some effort to move it to the end of its travel and install the belt. That leads me to think one of the pulleys is out of alignment.

Tomorrow I am going to take some 1000 grit sandpaper sand to back of the belt while the engine is running. The squeak is steady but not constant at idle. Maybe there are some shiny spots on the back of the belt and they squeaking when the pass over the idler or the vacuum pump. I sanded the vacuum pump pulley when I changed the belt because I read a glaze on it will cause a squeak.

I am comfortable one of the accessories is not going to lock up. I will keep my old belt in the truck for insurance.
