stroker 302 questions

usually kick around in the 57-60 forum...but I am going to swap in a stroker 302 in time and am wanting to know if anyone on here has built one of these motors before? anything to look out for? what is best block to look for? where did you get your kit? I am going to go carburator and auto tranny...do I need high stall converter?

thanks in advance

Joe

I'm building a stroker 351w so I'll answer what I can and give you my opinion.

First, what's your goals power wise? Stock blocks are generally safe up to around 450-500hp at the flywheel. Above that they get iffy. I'll assume you're looking for somewhere around 350hp +/-.

Block. Get a roller 5.0 out of any late model vehicle. Trucks started to get them in the early 90's - 92-93-ish. Mustangs had them since 85 with other cars coming on line in the late 80's and they continued up till the end with the mountaineer/explorer.

If you can get a 96-97 mountaineer/explorer they'll have the GT40 heads which are one of the best factory Windsor 302 heads. 98 and up started the GT40P which is still a good head but has revised spark plug locations requiring specific manifolds. They'll get you to 300hp but not much beyond. For 350+hp you'll need a good 170cc head minimum and a 185-190cc head would be better. Above 400hp you'll want to think about a 205cc head.

The next part of this is sort of related. The cam, intake, carb, converter and gears all have to be matched.

Compression. GT40P's have around 60cc chambers, GT40's are around 65cc. Lots of aftermarket heads are available in both.

With a .039" gasket, pistons .020" below the deck, and 60cc Chambers a 12.5cc dish piston will give you around 9.4:1 compression on a 347. Change to a 65cc head and you'll have 8.9:1 compression. Switch to a 5cc dished piston with those same 65cc heads and you'll have 9.6:1 compression and switch to a .047" thickness gasket and you'll get 9.4:1.

A 5.0 block, eagle rotating kit, TFS 190 CNC heads, Comp XE276HR cam and Performer RPM intake will get you about 400hp at the flywheel while being street friendly. The 276 is a bit small for a 347, but that'll give it more driveability while sacrificing some power. You'll want a 2400-2500 stall converter and 3.73+ gears.

Here's a sound clip of the 276 cam in a 331.

Joe. lot's of variables to what you are looking to do. Like f100beatertruck mentioned, set your goals and then start the process. From experience though. Do the research and do the build right the 1st time. It'll save you a ton of time and money.

In a full size pickup, I'd go with a roller 351 before building a 302 based stroker. You can find these in many 95-97 pickups an vans for way less than you'll spend building a stroker
