I bought my ranger a few months ago, with a blown up motor. I asked a friend of mine to help trailer it home, and he obliged. He was one of my best friends, and we bonded over cars. He died last night, in his garage.
He told me about the 4bt engine. I know it's mopar, but he told me I should put it in my ranger. I want to know what I have to do to make his idea a reality. This post will probably annoy some people, but I really need help getting this started.
The 4 bt is a diesel from cummins, its not a dodge product. It was used in fork lifts, bread trucks etc. Some nice looking rangers have been built around it, but you better have some $$ to done. No diesel swap is cheap and you better check your state laws to see if they will accept the change since the ranger did not come with a diesel in many years.
According to the link below, the 4BT came in Dodge, Ford and Chevy flavors, meaning it had different adapters to allow it to mate to the different transmissions.
Since V8 Ranger swaps are somewhat common (The Ranger Station - Engine & Fuel Systems Library), you might want to start off with the Ford flavor of 4BT. It should make matching the engine to drivetrain easier. The year of your Ranger will be a factor, as mentioned in the swap articles.
Get your hands on the wiring diagram and EVTM for your Ranger. Doing the swap without it would be very difficult.
