Alright, some of you might think this is strange (I do), but i also think it is rather cool. My buddy has some money to blow and wants to do a fun project. He decided he wants to throw a diesel into his ranger than currently has the 3.0. The strange part is, instead of going for a 2.x for gas mileage, like most people would, he wants to throw a bigger engine in it. My question is, what is the largest (and best) diesel that could be swapped into this ranger? It is a 95 2wd. Obviously transmission and stuff will need swapped as well.

If you want the engine sitting next to you in the cab, got for a Cummins 6BT(5.9). You can also go with the 4BT(3.9), it would be the easiest. You can hop up a 4BT just like the 6. There's a guy that drag races a Ranger with a twin turbo 4BT, cant remember what his time slips are though. But with around 250hp, it would scoot the Ranger really well, plus get almost 30mpg(if you wanted good mpg's). I think the drag Ranger makes about 500hp. Realistically, 400hp is tops for a street driven 4BT. Cummins makes adapters for GM, Dodge, and a C6.

LOL it would be nice to get the 8v92 in there. the 4BT is a good idea, i'm betting that once i pass that along he'll prolly go with that, thanks for the response.
nah. the 8V-92TT is way to small. for a 95 4X2 ranger, you need at least a 16V92TT.
now for reality, look into the yanmar marine diesel's, or the volvo penta marine diesels. you can get a 4 cylinder turbo diesel that will put out 150-200 hp.
