I had my brother mount new tires on some aluminum wheels. He has only balanced wheels requiring the clip on style weights on the inside and outside edge of the rim. On the aluminum wheels, we could see two grooves on the inside of the rim where the old weights were placed using the stick on weights. Seems like the more we tried, the worse it got. We are using an older Snap On machine but just can't get them balanced. We thought it might be just 1 tire/wheel combo, but we get the same thing on all 4. The inside groove is pretty close to the outside edge of the wheel and we can get that number closer to 0 but the outside groove(which is actually closer to the center of the wheel) is all over the place. We are using the correct centering cone and it's locked down tight on the machine. We even used an old steel wheel, removed the weights and re-balanced it very easily using the clip on weights thinking the machine may need calibrating. What are we doing wrong?
lug center/hub center does not make any difference. as said, you need to set the machine for static balance.
i do not like using the stick on weights, i have much better luck with clip on weights.
i have found the stick on do not hold that well unless you get the rim surface like new clean.
i have to clean clean clean, then clean the area with acetone to get them to stick properly.
it just ain't worth it, and if the person has to have them, they pay $20 per wheel for mount and balance instead of $10
