Let the rebuild begin
First the story. My wife inherited this truck from her grandfather, it has close to 450,000 miles on it. It was first owned by a Winter Texan that would use it to tow a trailer all over the US and parts of Canada. Then it ended up on a ranch in South Texas and that is where it stayed.
Now i am trying to get it back up and running and slowly restore it as a tow vehicle for my mustang and for family camping trips. So far i have replaced the cap, rotor, wires, plugs, fuel filter, oil filter, battery, and front tank fuel pump.
The problems. The truck is a 5 speed and the clutch it burned out. But my wife wants to swap to Auto so i don't know which transmission would go best with this truck and what is all needed. It is going to get an aftermarket floor shifter since my wife likes that over the column shift. Another thing is the gauges are all messed up, the speedometer bounces around past 30 mph and the fuel gauge does not want to read on either tank even with the new fuel pump.
When we get down to the engine, the smog pump is shot and missing the pulley. My wife's grandfather just bought a shorter belt and ran it like that so i need to find a way to either fix the smog system or find a way to delete it all entirely. Another problem i have is i bought an OBD1 scan tool and i keep getting a cylinder 1 missfire even though i changed the plugs, wires, and cap/rotor. And the truck will not run right past 40 mph, it starts to buck like a wild horse. I know the engine needs a rebuild but i do not know what i would need past that.
Any ideas would be helpful. I do not get to see this truck often but when i do i will try to gather as much information for you guys as possible.
The whole smog system can be deleted without affecting engine operation and it would be a good idea anyway since air leaks in this system in the wrong place at the wrong time can cause a lean condition.
