New member where with a question the a non-factory remote start. I just picked up a used 2014 Expedition XL. It came with a non-factory remote. My question is, should the truck shut off when the doors are opened after I have started the truck with the remote? I have had many other vehicles with non-factory remotes and they all stay running when you open the door. I picked this up used and the dealer said this was owned by a Ford Rep and not a private owner. Would this have anything to do with MYKey? I don't know if I have any access to MYKey.
A previous owner of my 2008 Expedition had a FORD aftermarket Remote Start added. I'm not sure hoe much it functions like a factory installed remote start unit. Mine will continue to run when I open the doors but turns off if I press the brake before inserting the key. Mine only runs for about 5 minutes before it turns off. I don't know if there are ways to reprogram any of the remote start features.
I just bought a 2012 Expedition EL Limited w/remote start. The engine shuts down as soon as any door is opened. This is a theft deterrent option.
There should be a way to re-program the remote start options. Seems silly that there is no way to unlock and open the doors without the engine stopping.
Theft deterrent starts with the doors locked but the owner and key holder should be able to unlock and open the doors to load the vehicle (packages, the day's lunch, briefcase...) without having the engine stop running. Any attempt to put the car in gear (move the shifter out if PARK) including stepping on the brake to release the shifter interlock) would then stop the engine and would be enough to prevent the vehicle from being stolen. The owner should be able to enter the vehicle with the remote start activated and engine running and insert the vehicle's key into the ignition and turn the key to run to enable the vehicle to be driven-without the engine shutting off. I've driven at least 4 Chrysler/Dodge/Jeep vehicles with factory remote start the work like this, as does my current 2008 Expedition with FORD after-market remote start and another aftermarket remote start that I had installed I my mom's 2001 Windstar in around 2005.
Just be forewarned. I just read on a Ford site that modifying or altering the operation of the remote start may void your insurance policy in the event of theft. Vehicle gets stolen, maybe wrecked or stripped, and then recovered and the insurance company finds that you have bypassed an anti theft feature and you could be on your own as far as making a claim goes.
That being said, I think a lot of us here have bypassed "safety" features and recommendations. Every time I'm at th dealer I get the speech about how my truck is lifted and chipped and intake and blah blah blah. It goes right in one ear and right out the other.

Just wanted you to be aware.
The insurance issue is 100% incorrect, people say the same thing about towing, modifications etc. People dream up these far fetched ideas that have ZERO facts to back them up. Heck my insurance company know's I've got a modified Ford GT and they have zero qualms about insuring it.
Maybe you're right, maybe not. Those performance mods aren't security mods. Me, it won't stop me. I've already switched mine over. Being in Texas, I carry nearly everywhere I go. Someone tries to steal from me and I've got a surprise for them. They won't get away.

except all those BS 51% places lmao and who the hell puts every shooting in front of a jury....Texans. Seriously I carry too but if someone is going to steal your truck and know what they are doing you won't know if for quite a while.
I don't usually go into 51% joints. If there's a 30.06 sign I won't use their business. You're right about someone that really knows how to steal cars. My post was in reference to when using a modified remote start and someone tries to jump into the vehicle to take off. I'm not going to be far away, most always within sight of the vehicle, and in that scenario I have the upper hand. Won't worry about a jury either due to Texas deadly force and property laws.
Now, if they want to steal it out of my driveway in the middle of the night, or from a crowded mall parking lot that is indeed another story and you're right. It'll be gone before you know it.
It is wired into the dome light when you open the door they turn on or when you put the key in they come on, for now I just have the dome light turned off until I crawl under the dash and find that wire and cut it.
Texas...does the fix in the video mean that the vehicle will not shut off if the brake is depressed prior to inserting and turning the key? I don't understand why an insurance company would take issue with it considering there is still a theft deterrent as you shouldn't be able to get it into gear without the key.
Deano...will yours now stay running when you open the doors, shut off with brake depressed and no key turned?
My fusion stays running and the Expedition ticked me off when I found out it shut down...defeats the purpose when trying to load the kids up in single digit temps.
Yes, mine stays running when I open the doors but will shut off if I step on the brake. Now when I open the door though the courtesy light doesn't come in and make it a bit difficult to put the key in when its dark out. I sure there must be another setting I just haven't looked for it yet.
