Help with Cloyes Timing set for performance

I am about to get this Crower cam (http://www.crower.com/camshafts/ford-240-300-6-cyl-hi-draulic-hauler-cam-284-hdp.html) along with my 240 head and roller rockers. I am a little worried about suffering from a little loss in bottom end power. I am thinking about buying the Cloyes timing set because you can adjust the timing advance. My question is which, if any, setting would lower my power band down to about 1500 rpm -4 degrees, straight up, or 4 degrees.

Thanks, John

If you're after bottom end power, that is the wrong camshaft for you, my friend. As it indicates, power is from 2500rpm to 6500rpm with the peak being at 6500. You'll also need high compression and a high stall converter to take advantage of the camshaft. I would like to steer you in the direction of the 19212 camshaft as it is much more street friendly.

Anyway, to answer your question, advancing the camshaft lowers the RPM band and retarding the camshaft raises it. It does not, however, give or take away any power. It only changes where it happens.

So if the camshaft already comes built in with 4 degrees of advance and I put the timing set at +4 degrees it will equal a total of 8 degrees advance right or am i missing something?

Thanks, John

The factory would set their cams 4 degrees retarded so a camshaft with 4 degrees of advance would be straight up, and I believe that's how Crower designs their camshafts to operate.

I still think you should choose another cam.

I have the crower 19212 and it has plenty of get up and go. I wanted the 19213 but I knew I wasn't going to have the compression to run that cam so my machinist picked the 19212 for me since he did the machine work for me. I am very pleased with this cam. My timing on my truck is at what stock timing would be I know if I messed around with the timing I would make more power but I'll save that until I change my intake to the offy c series and I put the holley 465 on there.

Dont get me wrong, I like bottom end power but Im looking for more upper rpm band power, that is why i chose this cam. The only thing is, I just wanted to see if i could move the power band down a tad with what I already have plannned to buy. If I cant then I wont and Ill just run it on the factor setting. To clarify your saying that the factory set the cams at -4 degrees and the cam comes from the factory with +4 degrees so they equal out and set the cam straight up. So if i was to set it at +4 degrees advance on the timing set it would actually be advanced by +16?

Thanks, John

The factory retards the cam 4 degrees. Crower cams come straight up at zero, i.e. advanced 4 degrees over factory. The Cloyes kit allows you to advance or retard the crank +/- 4 degrees, which will alter the cam by 2 degrees depending on which way you go.

To lower the peak power, advance the cam.

You will have a total of +2 advance.
