My trans temp gauge ('02 7.3L PSD) seems to indicate the same (approx middle of gauge sweep) temp at all times; start up, city, highway, etc. I don't do any towing or steep hillclimbing at the moment, so I'm somewhat comfortable with the fact that it doesn't go too high, but to be in the middle on start up??
Do factory tranny temp gauges have a bad history? Is mid-temp reading on start up normal?
The stock tranny gauge will never read like a 'REAL' gauge. I just installed an Autometer tranny gauge; stock gauge is in the middle of sweep after about 3 miles. Autometer gauge reads appr. 120. Non-towing the highest I've seen has been 165. Haven't towed with new gauge yet.
There is a site out there where a guy did his own testing on that stock gauge. He had pic's and all, it was a good page. It' s pretty much a dummy gauge but it has different settings. I believe there are 5 positions it will sit at, but i'm not sure of the temps. I'm thinking 210 was the yellow stage, but I can't remember for sure.
I bought the Autometer single pod for the steering column. It holds a 2 1/16 gauge. It looks clean and does not block the rest of the dash. Bought gauge and pod from Jegs.com.
cgl - I think the factory gauge has a range for three positions on the gauge face. I read if it's in the yellow, pull over and let it cool NOW!
My temp gauge is usually at 150, the highest it was at was 180.
Thats strange, mid-way at startup ? My needle moves after around 8 miles (or less) of driving, and it moves up slowly.
