The 2002 XLT 5.4L Auto-4x4 That I just bought came to me with a swapped in (used ) cluster from the seller.
So, what I have learned is that the heated mirror and rear defrost TIMER is in the cluster somewhere...............
The timer gives relay 304 ground for the duration of the "heat".
I know that I can rig a bypass with an illuminated switch to ground the 85 pin on relay 304
My question is.....can this problem be resolved by reprogramming the used cluster to match my truck?
I know that they reprogram mileage and add the correct VIN to replacement clusters installed by dealers. Is it perhaps possible that by inserting the correct VIN, that the cluster then "knows" what functions to add/remove????
Well, yes and I was told it had been swapped out along with all the information he had.
Now,back to the point
Can anyone shed light on the situation regarding the Heated mirror TIMER circuit that seems to be in the cluster??? Can it be programmed back to proper functionality? Or must I purchase yet another cluster thru a dealer and have them program it correctly for my truck?
Ok, buying a cluster through a dealer isn't an option. Your best bet is to break out the wiring diagrams we have in the tech folders and start wiring them up yourself. As far as timers I have no idea how exactly you would wire that in but it should be pretty straight forward.
EDIT: Also, finish filling out your profile so we know your location, someone might be close to you and be able to help you more
You can buy a reman cluster for about 250 bucks if you want another cluster, they program everything, including your correct mileage, in for you. That is what I plan to do to fix my malfuntioning speedo. However, as I have a scangauge that has a speedometer, it is pretty low on the priority list right now, lol.
As far as your original question, I would first verify that everything is hooked up properly. I don't know if the programming would have anything to do with it or not. If you have to pull it out, I would check all the circuits out. I have fixed a few older PCB instrument clusters that had a circuit path break or burn out, I am not sure what these clusters are like though, I am sure it is a bit better technology than the ones I usually worked on, lol.

Could you provide a link to the re-man supplier please??
Update:
went to a local dealer..HOO- BOY!!!
The tech said that my GEM was the problem along with a bad cruise module.
He also stated that a GEM MUST BE PROGRAMMED after a new one is installed......BUT another local dealer tells methat a GEM is plug and play.
Does anyone know FOR SURE who is correct??
BTW, I have a source for cruise modules .....they still have 8 used units .
While their web sales says they have none, a follow up call found 9 on the shelf...LOL
I got the cruise module from Oregon today and in 15 minutes,my cruise control is fixed.....once I pulled the old one, I immediately saw the reason it was bad.......corrosion had eaten thru the lower part of the case for the motor that drives the cable.....very sad scenario..........gone.
Back to the GEM.....the local Ford dealer used the word"GEM" when talking about the module that is installed above the heater core /behind the glovebox......I think that is actually the PCM and the dealer called it a GEM ...they gave me the part # and I ordered and installed it .( for $120 less than dealer cost) but my heated mirrors and rear defrost still do not work.
If you recall, can make them function by grounding the 85 pin on relay#304.
So, the circuit is looking for a ground which is normally supplied by the timer ....now I am not sure that the timer is in the dash cluster any longer.....
Only remaining issues are the 4x4 dash lights and the defrost problem.
The GEM will be the next victim of my scrutiny.

The GEM is definitely above the interior fuse box.
I know it controls a lot of timing functions, as well as 4x4. I'm just not sure what else it has its hands in.
Being that they're no longer available. I'm gonna try and fabricate up something to substitute for mine when it eventually fails.
