to fix or replace the motor!

Good evening everyone.
I have a 1986 F250 with a for 460 in her. I have a bent pushrod ( maybe two) and I am just wondering what would all be involved to fixed. or a found a 460 with low mileage on it and was wondering if I should just swap it out. the engine has a timing chain, and head gaskets that were done recently. the only thing is the engine is not in a vehicle so I cant hear it run.

any suggestions

thanks Mario

Do you know the cause of the bent pushrods?
How many miles on your '86?
When was the last time IT had the timing chain done?

Maybe the most effective repair would be to change the lifters and bent pushrods?
You would do the timing set as a matter of course when pulling the cam.
Use a non-retarded gear set, or the later roller chain set from an EFI engine.

What year is the engine you've found?
Is there any reason to suspect it?
460's are not known for blowing head gaskets, but they do crack between the exhaust and the spark plug.

I am in the middle of something similar right now. I decided to rebuild and it's expensive and takes a lot of time. The problem with rebuilding is as you get into it, you find more and more things that need to be addressed, which costs more and more money and time. Yes, you will have a "brand new" engine, but is the rest of the truck deserving the time and expense of having a new engine?

With the project I am doing now, I have in the back of my mind after going through the rebuild process, if something happens to the truck I will jerk the rebuilt engine out and put it in something else. I just have too much money, time, and work involved to let it go to the junkyard if it gets wrecked or something else serious happens. When I am done, the money I have in it will be about half the truck's blue book value. So you have to be careful about that too. That's why I got a deal on it, a new engine would have cost more than the blue book value of the vehicle.

It's a hard decision in your case, since you can't hear the other engine run. You do not know what that engine will bring. I found out "runs good" means different things to different people.

If it's just a couple of bent push rods, I would replace them first. That would be the cheapest and easiest fix. It has worked for me.

Any idea how you bent the rods?
I've seen quite a few threads here, but no one can explain it.

I guess I've just been fortunate.

In my case it was over revving , while spinning on ice. 2 of my push rods were bent close to the shape of an S, others were slightly bent, when I rolled them on a flat surface.

This motor (351 M) had been rebuilt approximately 7 years before this incident. All original push rods were used, with very high kms.(over 300,000). I'm not sure if that was the cause of them bending. Previous rebuilt motors I have always gotten new push rods. My solution to this problem, I really keep an eye on my revs.

My current engine has 222,000km on it. I don't know if that is the true mileage as the speedo was not working when i got it and i dont know how long it been like that for. And i dont know how the pushrods got bent. I bought the truck with them like that. As for timing i dont know if it been done. It has been on my list of things to do since i bought the truck. I have been wanting to do new intake manifold, cam, and lifters and pushrods. But i just had other things come up. And that is something i worry about if i start digging into the engine what other issues do i find

I dont know what year the motor . I phoned the guy yesterday and wanted to see if it was still available. And then my mind went blank on what other questions to ask him.

Thanks for all the iput
