I have a 1962 f-100 with a Ford 9 inch rear end. There was a metal tag bolted to one of the pumpkin bolts and after a slight blast, water and bright flashlight was able to get these numbers off the tag. Can anyone help me ID the component?
Sorry that this will be almost no help, but I'm pretty sure the final drive ratio is 3.70 and if it is a Ford 9 inch it will be non-limited slip as Ford was not making limited slip 9 inch axles in 1962. It would probably have been a Dana diff to get limited slip. Better than nothing (but not much). Since you have the data plate, there's a fair chance that might still be the original ring and pinion in there after 52 years - but no guarantee.
ss, my 65 has a non 9" rear end, and it has a limited slip tag on it. 3(L)54 gears, loads from the rear. iv'e been told a dana 44? has 100k on it, so obviously it's a pretty servicable unit, but how do they compare with the 9"? are the rear brakes the same as a 9"?
Yellodog - does your '65 have its original warranty plate riveted to the driver's door? If so, and the axle code is A8, then your differential is a Dana 44 with limited slip and 3.54 gears. If the axle code is A9, then your differential is a Dana 60-2 with limited slip and 3.54 gears. This information comes from my '66 Ford Truck factory workshop manual, Group 1, Vehicle Identification, page 6, Figure 18. I don't think the codes for '65 are different than '66, but if so I apologize.
thanks ss, door tag says A8, so it's a dana 44. wish it was a 9", i could put a higher ratio in it cus i have several 9" center sections, and i'd like to make it a little more cruising friendly. that being said, i brought it home at 65mph, no problems.
