The 2001 Dana 50 is wider than the 1965 axle (backing plate to backing plate comparisons). Since the drivers side leaf spring mount is part of the differential casting itself, you would end up having to shorten tubes and axles for the Dana 50 to sit correctly under the 65. I just went through this last week and thats why I ended up buying the Dana 60 high pinion from a 1978 F250 instead of a Dana 50 front and Sterling 10.5 rear. On the 77.5 / 78 / 79 F250, the spring perches are same distance apart as the 64 / 65 and generally speaking its a better axle than the Dana 50.

Yes, it is, because it is a "stronger" and "better" axle for all intensive purposes. Im not sure what your after. Your posts run the gamut from Dana 44, high pinion, Dana 50, etc. What exactly do you have, and what do you wish to accomplish? This forum has loads and loads of info on it with all years of the Ford trucks. So if you spend time between this forum and google or whatever, you should be able to find plenty of info for what you need.

Thanks for pointing that out regarding rear axle. Perches on axle for the 1978 rear Dana 60 would need to be moved. The front axles being discussed however measure 32" between spring perches on either the 1964 Dana 44 or the 1978 Dana 60 as far as my Lufkin tells me anyway..

I have the same front axle you do. Dana 44 closed knuckle, drum brakes, 8 lugs. You are correct, as far as I have researched also, a disc brake conversion kit out of the box is not available. The most cost effective solution to get disc brakes up front IMO is to find axle(s) from a late 77 to 79 F250 or F350 (these are disc brakes). The Dana 60 "high pinion" (actual name is Dana60RS for reverse spiral, same as Dana44RS - high pinion is a nickname) for Ford in those years came with 3:54 or 4:10 ratios. In my case, my 64 Dana 44 has 4:55 in front and 4:56 in the Dana 60 rear. I picked up the front and rear Dana 60 axles from the 78 F250 because they are matched set with 3:54 ratio. In other words, you need to consider your ratio as well when you do your swap. Hunt around. It took me a long time of vigilant Craigslist searching to find the axles I found, and I will still end up tearing the down and installing new bearings, seals, etc. Its not a low dollar hobby if you want to make changes to the stock components. In regard to a Dana44 with original disc brakes, I believe you will find these were only on F-100's or Broncos with 6 lug hubs, not certain because I was chasing the D60RS. The power steering will be a whole different phase, and also I assume you will add power brakes, yet another modification hurdle. Good luck, take your time -

Do you know if the gears and/or carrier from the closed knuckle dana 44 will work in a 78/79 dana 44?. I foud and purchased it complete, turns out it has the 3.54 and not the 4.10's. like my rear

No they won't. The later ones are high pinion axles.
