Feedback carb mixture adjustment?

86 300 1bbl feedback carb
When i tinkered with the carb previously i ran the mixture screw all the way in the backed off 1-1/4 turns. Got it idling very well. But im lacking any hill power in 4th (np435 granny 4) at 35/40mph. I almost think its rich but how is that possible? Every carb i have touched before was full in then back out 1-1/4 or so for base mixture.

Anyway, how did you set yours? No vac gauge available. Air pump removed by po. Doing ignition/carb swap in about 3 months. Just want to get this working well til then.

Btw what is THE go to replacement 1bbl?

Idle mixture is for idle. If there's a problem with hills then something else is going on, and not necessarily carburetion.

Pull the codes. There's a how-to in the stickies. The computer will tell what problems there are - if any.

I use a digital volt meter on the O2 sensor to see the mixture.

I still have a feed back carb and have no plans on swapping it out as there is no noticeable improvements by doing so.

Did you ever say where you picked up the ported vacuum for the DSII distributor? If you did I have forgotten. I thought this was a problem with the feedback carb?

I picked the one about 1 inch to the left of the idle adjustment screw, it has the blue tape on it in the picture.
It seemed to react correctly with the timing light and in a best case scenario I can consistently get 17 mpg so I am happy with it. But to be fair my normal is 14-15 mpg.

I think this feed back carb is off an 84 or 85 as it doesn't have a TPS on it.

I think the red hose is a high-temp material and is used from the hot-air choke to a port in the air horn where it pulls filtered air.
