Help removing steering wheel
Can anyone tell me how to go about removing the steering wheel from my 1959 F100? It's a custom cab model with the 3 spoke steering wheel and the horn ring, not the standard horn button. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
The 59s all had white steering wheels, or so I'm told. My steering wheel is black, so I don't think it is the original wheel. I'd like to remove it to paint it white.

You want a puller. Like a universal. There will be a couple threaded holes to use the puller once the horn button is removed. A shot of penetrating oil won't hurt overnight.
Tighten the puller gradually, and maybe try a sharp rap directly on the steering column with a hammer. Piece of cake!

Only custom cabs had white steering wheels. Others had black. To remove the horn ring, you will need to push firmly and evenly on the center of it, enough to make the horn blow, you may well want to unhook the horn before you bother the wife, then turn the center hub to the left and it will lift off into you hands. There is a spring under there that will lift it towards you. As Ted just said, you will need a puller of sorts to remove the wheel itself. First remove the retaining nut from the shaft and then you will be able to see how the wheel is pushed onto a splined section. This can take some effort to remove. However, a suitable puller will have it off in a jiffy.

Here's a link with a pic of a simple one. It basically pushes on the center shaft and pulls on the hub.
Enjoy your truck

Thanks for the help, guys. I managed to locate a steering wheel puller.
Looks pretty simple. Disconnect the battery, remove horn ring by pushing down the center and rotating left. Remove bolt at top of steering column, with penetrating oil if necessary. Then use the puller.
I'll try it this weekend.
Oh, and by the way, my truck is a custom cab, so it needs a white wheel to be original in appearance. Didn't know the others hads black wheels. Thanks for the info.
