Well snow forecast for tomorrow so thought I would test out the 4WD for the first time in my 03 V10 Limited. Passenger side hub locks manually but drivers side appears to be stuck. Tried to carefully turn with a channel lock and tapped lightly with a hammer - will not turn.
I tried out the 4WD high and it appears to engage, light comes on dash. Did not try out 4WD low yet.
Any suggestions on how to free what appears to be a frozen driver side hub?

That would be my next step - I tried to move both front axle sides and they appear locked. Since not sure if the driver side is in the locked position will I have 4WD ability if only the passenger locks - either automatically or manually? If the driver side is in the locked position I assume no harm is being done when I am in 2WD.
The auto function sounds like its still working if you have it in 4 High by the dash switch if the axles won't rotate behind the wheels whether the hub dials move or not. If one side doesn't engage via the shift on the fly dash switch then, no it won't help you in the snow with one hub activated and one not activated.
And as was said, taking them apart, cleaning and relubing should get all functions back to normal.
This is your repair Brent, you can explain it to him better than that.
If he takes it all apart he will surely clean it up and lube it and then we can go from there. Often people want things fixed but they haven't done the obvious first step yet.
did some research and looks way less involved than I initially thought - looks like just remove the tire, cover from the hub, retaining ring and it should just slide out...

Obvious to one person may not be obvious to the next person. This is why we are here, right?

No, actually axles won't rotate with dash switch off and passenger side manually unlocked. If drivers side is stuck in manually locked position would it prevent axles from rotating on both sides? FYI - not afraid to get my hands dirty but cannot address this job for a few weeks - just want to ensure I don't mess anything up driving her like this in the interim. I am somewhat of a newb to 4WD systems but otherwise have pretty good mechanical knowledge and skills. Thanks for any and all info...
If the axles won't rotate from the steering U joints then they are locked in, either by a hub set to lock or a buggered up hub that is stuck internally in lock. It won't hurt anything driving like that with the dash switch set to 2 High except your gas mileage as that setup will add a little extra drag to the drivetrain. Lots of Northern folks keep their hubs locked all Winter and just shift in/out of 4X4 as needed.
I don't think the tire needs to be removed, the auto hub should be able to be removed with the truck just sitting there normally.
That's good news - I was thinking that the wheels put a load on the bearings and couldn't be removed unless the truck is jacked up and wheel removed. I actually need to wait until after the holidays to afford a new jack that will lift this beast - don't want to play with the emergency jack and not likely to get a flat any time soon on my new Goodrich ATs. Might tackle this weekend and see if I can free it up. Wondering once I free up the driver hub what kind of increase in mileage I will see - great info, thanks guys!
