After paying a shop over $1000 to paint a good used tailgate (after they quoted me $500) for my f150 I was just wondering how to paint a panel (tailgate) a different colour? Assuming it is in good shape just the wrong colour. I'm sure this would of been a project I could of tackled at home in my shop and saved quite a bit of money. Just not sure if I would of needed to take it down to the bare metal? Or maybe just sand down to the primer? Any advice on this would be appreciated. Thank. Also I did post this over at the paint and bodywork forum but they don't get too much traffic over there. Thanks again.
The normal way to paint a truck or panel would be to remove the wax / polish, then sand the clear coat off down to the base coat or primer. Don't have to be bare or all primer, just clean and no clear coat.......... Then spray a primer coat as a "bond" to the old paint, then your finish paint. I assume they put a clear coat on top of that.
So what kind or grit of sand paper would a guy use? Hand sand or power sander? Also what kind of primer? Just from doing searches it looks like there are at least two different kind of primers. Epoxy primer and sealer primers. I'm pretty clueless when it comes to body work but very interested. Thanks
You can start with 220 grit wet/sand paper, but probably want to finish with 400 grit before the primer. Type of primer depends on the finish paint. If you have not painted before, then you don't have a gun or air compressor ? That makes it tough. You need to stop by the local body/ paint shop and talk to a couple guys.. get an idea of the types of paints and the cost. Generic enamel is not too expensive. Epoxy and other paints are more expensive.. Primers must match the paint.
You could do what I did, I live in Michigan and work in Kentucky about once a month. I watched Cragslist for about a month, found a tailgate the same color as My truck (white).called the seller and drove over and bought it. I payed $150 for it . Even if I had payed for gas and a hotel it would still be cheaper than $1000. Scott
