Paint Question

My old tailgate was all dented and stuff, so I got one from the junkyard and put it on. It is a pretty nice one with a couple of dings, but will do the job. Here is the question:
My truck is gray and the tailgate is sort of a navy blue. I want to match the tailgate to the truck. I am not looking for a flawless job or anything, just something that you would maybe call a "ten footer". I don't have an air compressor, nor a spray gun or paint booth. I had the idea of sanding the old paint and roughing it up, then spraying the tailgate gray with a rattle-can, do a couple of coats, then rattle-can some clear on it. Will this end up looking bad? Another idea I had was to just use some gray primer on it, as the primer would probably be easier to make look more "even". I realize that the primer won't be shiny, which I don't really care about, but I have also heard that primer can absorb moisture if left on without paint. What is the best combination of least expensive, attractive, and ease of application that I can achieve without the proper setup? Thanks guys.

Nothing wrong with your idea. If the tailgate is just the wrong color all you need to do is scotch-brite it and paint. Find a local auto paint supply store and they can fix you up with some good rattle can paint. Even mix your color and load in cans for you.
