Bleeding My Breaks... Help
Got the hard pedal back! What it was, had the adjusters backed off WAY too far e.g. "no drag". They weren't seated good. That doesn't work with drums too well, at least not initially. The rears especially, took a full turn or two of the adjusters to reach some drag again. May even bleed a final time because some have stated if the shoes aren't adjusted close to the drum prior to bleeding the rubber cups may cover up the inlet and they will never bleed right. This will give the nice high and tight pedal. The shoes may need to wear in a little bit too, to the drum. The self-adjusters will take it from there, BUT not ever no how if the initial adjustment is too loose! The initial manual adjustment is important.
Years ago, they arc'd shoes to fit better to the drum and that made a big difference, and even new drums these days are often out of round and could really use a light turning.
edit: After reading some suggestions here and at the HAMB, I applied the parking brake about halfway - firmly but not reefed down, and ran the adjusters out as far as possible on all four wheels and bled everything one last time.
Note the self-adjusters when setup right and lubed will allow tightening the shoes with just a screwdriver, or brake spoon. Backing them off though, needs two tools, one to push the adjusting lever out of the way and another to loosen the star wheel. They are not supposed to ever loosen on their own or adjust without this safety feature.
That adjustment turned out to be about perfect after the park brake was let off. The fronts turned out to be fine as well. Then I made about eight or ten medium braking actions from 60 MPH down to about 30 out on the highway in fairly quick succession. Then did some fast backups to full stop so the adjusters would take up any slack. She stops on a dime now!
