The problem is the oil around the bearings which get gummed up from the cooking. Many an aircraft turbo worked fine on shutdown and fail on start. But that is not what this thread is about so moving on.

My egt does not like really cold. Way wrong. It will work correct if I unplug and plug in gauge after the cabin warms.

I guess we're getting slightly off topic.....but, if EGT's are 500° or less, AND the engine is at idle when shut down, there should not be any issues. Now if someone is pulling hard down the road at say 1100° egts and then truck is turned off/shuts down for whatever reason.....thats not good. We don't hear of many center section failures, mostly vanes sticking or compressor blades getting sandblasted from bad filtration.

Anyway, he has something going on for it to take that long to go from 500 to 400 degree egt's. 1. Gauge accuracy, 2. Overfueling, 3. Lack of air intake/ exhaust restriction would be things I would check.

Some things come to mind beside a dirty air filter , have you check your IAT2 sensor? this sensor play's a roll in with the MAF which detects air temps, it also has the exhaust temp and relays info back to the PCM. being in the Intake and lots of soot this sensor will be gummed up. it's located behind the upper fuel bowl .

For what it's worth....this is my truck up to temp after a 30 minute drive, pulling in driveway at 400* EGT. Then I take temps of drivers exhaust manifold at egt probe (385°) y-pipe (291°) downpipe (285°) and turbo oil feed line (182°) and turbo center section (210°) After about 4 minutes or filming, the egts were at 300°. Just giving you an idea what another truck acts like.

Sorry folks, spent the day losing, finding, bumping, losing, finding, bumping again, the biggest deer I've ever shot. Finally bumped him onto the next farm...lost for good. Bummer. After I got home, I checked the air filter (I have the evil cold air intake, and yes, I am aware of its inherent problems) and found that the filter had popped off of its mount! Hence, no filtering of the intake. I'm guessing that air is not too "cold" coming in there. I brought it in and have cleaned it. Will reinstall tomorrow and see if that affects my cooling time. I suspect it will.

I've watched it closely over 2 days now, through a wide range of temperatures, and it appears to be cooling the way it always did before. I think the filter falling off the mount was the problem. Thanks to all who gave advice.

No, I have the evil AFE cold air intake. This has happened before, where the filter pops off. I've not noticed the cooling problem before, but this is just my second winter with the cold front. I think it was sucking hot air, since it wasn't coming from "out front" like it's supposed to. I'd like to put the stock one back on, but I haven't found it yet.

Thanks for that. Unfortunately, I still own the '06 truck I used as a donor for my 4wd conversion. I need to check the condition of that box and see if the '06 box will fit my '03.
