When im driving my 78 f150 or even just parked with the truck on turning the wheel is ok but its not smooth when i turn. Ill turn the wheel to the right an can feel it like lock in a sense but its not locked itll stay in that postion if i just let go but i can physically turn the wheel with little pressure but at a certain point of turning i can feel it click. When i go to the left its easier but has some play in the wheel can anybody help me decifer this problem
I had a similar issue with mine. It turned out to be a bad u-joint on the intermediate shaft where it connects to the steering column. I replaced the whole steering shaft with one from Bronco Graveyard, smooth steering now.
Can i see a picture or something of what i should look at causw i cant afford a whole steering shaft right now at the prices im seeing could i buy a new u joint for it
They do make just a u-joint, but my factory joint was welded on the shaft. You probably could cut it off and make the replacement joint work. They sell just the joint too at Bronco Graveyard's website. Open you hood and look at the steering shaft couples to the steering column. You will see a u-joint. You can remove your shaft from the truck and move the u-joint with your hand if it is tight in any direction then it needs replacing. It is not hard to do.
