I recently bought a 1995 f350 4x4 with the zf5 speed manual in it. I knew the transmission needed replaced, and I was prepared for that but now with the second transmission in it that has failed my budget is slim and I'm weighing my options. The transmission I have now is out of a junkyard. It checked out, when I got it home I figured out that a synchronizer was broke. I decided to run it because I had not many other options. Tonight I drove it to see what it would do, it will not go into 3rd gear for anything and it slips out of reverse. I cannot downshift into 2ned either. It has new fluid in it, clutch is new.
I can either rebuild it for 200$ or I can return it to the junkyard and get my 100$ back and save 500 to buy a newer one. I'm only 14 so I don't have much of a stable job so I need to go with a cost effective option. I need to know if I rebuild it, will that fix my problem or will I be out 300 bucks and still need a tranny.
I will be doing all my own mechanic work so everything is taken care of, my dad is excellent and he will be helping me with all of it so that will not be an issue. Thanks
I would take the transmission back to the junkyard and either get my money back or get a replacement. It sounds like what you bought is what you already had, a junk transmission.
If you have the time and energy (at your age probably more readily available than cash) ask the jy to exchange the bad one and only another swap. Hopefully the second one will be good. Otherwise, your best bet would be to return it for your money back, save some more cash, and rebuild what you already have. Unless your old transmission has grenaded in which case I guess you could treat the bum $100 one as a core, but that seems like an expensive core.

I agree, your young and ambitious, either return it to the JY for another trans or tear the one apart you have and rebuild it. If you and your dad have time and a place to lay out all the parts you'll be able to completely go through everything and make sure it's all in good shape, replace what's needed and with the proper care you should have a trans that will give you thousands of carefree miles.
UPDATE: I'm ThorpBoy's Dad. We took the tranny back to the JY and got his money back. Well, sorta. They gave him a store credit but we've since used it up.
We found a good used tranny and transfer case and put it in.
The truck runs great now and he's been driving it to school for a few weeks now.
