Hi, I have a 97 4x4 f150 4.6L
I was drivin to work today and the tranny started slippin a lil, it felt just like the wheels were breakin loose, but i wasnt accelerating very hard. If I just floor it from the line I dont feel any slip all the way threw first gear. When i floor it at about 40 it clunks and starts slippin. (that would be second gear)
I called a few tranny shops and guy was sayin 1200 or so if its one transmission and 1800 or so if its the E40D, I was thinkin that the E40D was the only tranny in my truck.
Is 1800 a good price for a rebuild of the E40D ? I was thinkin it sounded like a deal but i have nothing to base it on.
Am I probably lookin at a total rebuild? Or just a torque converter, or clutch packs? Or what could be causin the slippage. Or once its started slippin if it is just one thing should I have it rebuilt or would just replacing the defective part be enough?
The slippage just started today, And it doesnt seem to slip at all if i drive easy, how much time do I have, if i drive it real easy, before Im walkin half way to school and leavin my truck on the side of the road?
If I was having it rebuilt, what exactly do they do? When it is bein rebuilt if I wanted it geared for more low end power, are the "gears" or pressure plates, or what ever it is in auto tranns. Are they replaced during a rebuild?
Thanks for your help in advance.
P.S. The O/D on/off light is not flashing
The fluid level is a lil high, its been like that since i bought the truck 7 months ago w/ 168k miles, and now at 175k its still the same level but it smelt a little bit burnt. Very light brown color i think, im bad w/ colors, what exactly should it smell like?
$1800 is a bit steep to be slapping into a tranny that will go out again soon. i would look into other options but i know with all the computer stuff and all in that tranny motor combo it could be very hard. i'd take your tranny out and send it to a very competent builder. one who knows exaclty what to do and will try to save you money.... not these AAMCO bullsh1t places. if you know it will last you a LONG time and comes with a HEAVY warranty then only then i could stepup to $1800 for a rebuild. i recently rebuilt my C6 and it cost me $100 total which includes brake cleaner and new grease and the rebuild kit. that's justa comparison!
Make sure you take it out and put it in yourself... they were gonna charge me an extra 600 just to take it out/put it back in when my mazda slushbox took a dump on me.
ya doing it yourself isnt hard, but i ddint do a rebuild, about 3 years ago, my dad and me were wheeling adn we went over a rock and dropped the tranny down on another and cracked it, well it didnt leak foir like a year, then about 2 years ago it starteed leaking, and then this year we had to replace the case and the pump cuz we put atleast 8 quarts threw it a day, were we replaced it at was in my shed, on the gravel in my front yard, wasnt real hard, just soem busted knuckeles and numb hands
i think it cost us like 250.00 for tranny fluid pump, case, and some bolts
Yea, I do not want to do it my self. What I would love to do it my self. But I can't let my first experiecnew orkin a tranny be on my own. If i had some experience with it thatd be one thing, but until i have some experience on some one elses tranny imma leave it to the pros. Money isnt a huge problem right now. so that makes it easier too
