Excursion vs Super Duty

Hello everyone,

I sold my F350 crew cab v10 Dually last year and got out of camping. Well, now we (the family) miss it and I am starting to hunt for another capable and lower cost family Tow Vehicle. We are a family of four and the Crew Cab fit us just fine.

This time I am starting to lean towards a V10 Excursion... Hopefully with 4.30 rear axle ratio. Not a deal breaker as I can have 4:30's swapped into a 3.73 truck. I loved the V10 in the F350 but the Dually didn't really fit into our lifestyle very well...

I'm going to be looking for an Excursion V10 or another SuperDuty V10 in the 3-5k range (not a dually this time). I see a ton of them but they typically have 150-250k miles. Which is Okay by me... these things go 3-500k with regular maintenance and I am very familiar with the modular motors.

The problem I have with the affordable SuperDuty trucks is the same one I had with mine. The affordable SuperDuty trucks are XL models and I want a bit nicer interior. Our F350's Floor Boards would get so hot in the summer that you couldn't put your bare feet on them.

Oh, I currently have a 2000 Town Car and the Excursion will replace the Town Car as my daily driver.

Anyway, sorry for the long post here are my actual questions
  • What made you choose an Excursion over a Super Duty?
  • I got about 9 MPG with my V10 dually in mixed driving… should I expect the same or a little better with the V10 Ex
  • Will we have the hot floorboard issues with the Excursion in an XLT or Lariat trim?

Thanks!

Jeremiah

1. I got my Ex for nearly free. Seriously.
2. I get a tad better in my Ex.
3. I do not know about either of those trim levels. Mine is a Limited.

On a side note, the Ex will not have as high of tow ratings as even an F-250 of the same year due to crummy stock springs. Good luck in your search.

The front seats forward on the excursion is identical to a superduty. Floor gets hot on nearly every vehicle i have owned, but never had one feel hot through my shoes.

The excursion is great for hauling family and stuff. The room inside is outstanding, the space behind the 3rd row is larger than the space behind the 2nd row of my former '97 Tahoe.

I love the capabilities of the excursion, the mpg of the PSD and it's 5 speed auto trans vs expedition or suburban/tahoe.

Plus a 44 gallon fuel tank!

In Wisconsin, it is tagged the same as a car. Much cheaper than a truck.

Do you want to haul dirty filthy crap. Get a truck.

If you want to haul cleaner things, get he Ex.

I chose an Excursion over a pickup because I got more truck for the money. Plenty of former soccer mom, grocery getters available for less money than the pickups. Mine came complete with gummy bears under the back seat and an unused trailer hitch! You still have a super duty drivetrain and capability.

I think 12 is reasonable in mixed driving, for some of us at least.

No floorboard issue in my XLT, the women are usually barefoot and we've been on long trips in 100 degree temps.

I got my excursion because I was dead set on a Ford diesel 4 door truck, and had to finance something under 60k and had to be 04 and newer when I bought. The super duties in my price and mileage range were bare bones roll up windows rubber floor mats while my excursion is a limited with literally every option one could order. Same price.

My floor mats don't get too hot but it's a diesel not a v10 and the exhaust runs down the passenger side. My wife says she's never noticed the floor being hot.

I was driving Excursion long before they payed me to drive one. It's the feel of the wheel in your hand with the wind in your hair. It's not about where you're going or where you've been but where you are...

Apoc, I think you used the wrong commercial...

As to your question about an Ex or a truck. I have had both, and we love the Ex. Room for the family, the dog and all of our gear in heated or air conditioned glory! It is perfect for the long road trips.

1. I had enough pickup's and wanted an Ex that's why i picked it.
2. Expect 8-10 city and 11-15 highway depending on the truck, gearing..ect
3. I've never had this issue with any truck of mine so it leaves me kind of confused

Another angle...when buying a used Excursion, they have generally been used as a family grocery getter/part time tow rig, where the Super Duty bought used was probably a work truck and generally used harder. Just a thought!

Thanks for the replies everyone. Our F350 had rubber floors...that plus 600 mile trip plus 100° outside...plus kids bare feet made for some hot floorboards.

I do appreciate the feedback, I love the super duty platform and the SUV form factor. I think I'll start saving and looking for our Excursion.

Thanks!

Jeremiah

Personally I like standing out with my vehicle. You see a ton of trucks, but not so many Excursions. Even here around Houston it's the same.

The ability to haul a ton of people AND cargo simultaneously is awesome. Also, you can have rear passengers easily access something in the back on the fly instead of having to pull over and grab it out of the bed. On that same note, better cargo security. Sure, you can get a shell for the truck - but at that point, why? Get an Excursion. I have fit an entire couch inside mine with the rear seat removed (it stays out pretty much all the same anyway) and the middle row folded and the rear end still closed up fine. It's nice not having to worry about a tarp or a bed cover for weather if you need to move something large.

Rear AC and heat for all rows for passenger comfort. The middle row reclines for added comfort on long trips for passengers. Hell, fold the 40-split seat down, hop in the rear seat if it's installed, and stretch out! I never run the rear seat since I haul stuff on frequent enough occasion that it's a hassle.

There's a lot of perks to the X over the truck cousin. Granted the tow rating is a bit lower, and right out of the box the X needs a bit of work to make a stable 'heavy haul' platform, but it's all easy and relatively cheap.

As already mentioned, but strong points worth another hit - insurance, registration, and overall vehicle condition. Cheaper, cheaper, and 80% chance in better overall shape and led an easier life respectively.

Thanks for the Response Matt,

What typically needs to be done the the Excursion to make them tow stable? f350 springs?

Thanks!
