My 250 has a problem that started today. We were working outside in central Jersey today, in the cold, all over a development. So we had to run the truck all over stopping and starting. By noon it would start and only idle. Moving the pedal did nothing. But if it was turned off and right back on it would be fine. Could this be the electronic gizmo under the throttle pedal? Or is it some other kind of gremlin. After an hour of that we just left it run. But we have to work tomorrow, and we are 2 hours from home. I would rather not get stuck up there. Any ideas? The truck is stock with 340K on it.
This could perhaps be an anomaly with the ignition switch itself. Or, a failing VSS. Did the MIL illuminate? Do you have access to a scanner to retrieve codes?
My buddys F250 had a similar issue, he would have to pull over and replace a fuse to get the pedal to respond. It would be good for a while and then go out again. He never got the issue resolved before he sold the truck, but it seemed like some sort of electrical short IMO blowing the fuse. Your issue seems different with the shutdown/restart fixing the problem, a blown fuse would not resolve itself like that. I would at least check the fuse associated with the throttle and make sure all is well.
my 02 used to do that, and at the worst times you could imagine. sometimes if you tried pulling out into traffic it would just die to idle, and the only way to get it to respond was to shut it off and restart.
i changed the throttle pedal assembly with one from a parts truck, and all was well again.
three weeks later i got a recall notice for defective pedal assembly.
so i put the old one back in, took it to ford and got it replaced for free so i could have a good one on the shelf.
Well my AE won't work. It says it won't connect, or can't. I tried it on my other truck and it doesn't work there either. So Monday I have to call and figure that out. Tomorrow I am going to change the VSS and the gizmo under the pedal. Napa has them without the pedal. The truck just turned 345K on it so it might fix it or it will be preventative maintenance. Monday I will get the AE working and check it with that. I hate to fix trucks in bad weather, but that is usually when they break down.
little thing that sorta looks like a flash drive
and i just looked it is called a security dongle
looks like this: USB Flash Drives | Lexar
I got mine in April. I don't have one of those. It worked before. I just haven't used it in a few months. Plus it has a dedicated computer that has never been on the internet. I will try again tomorrow, but if it doesn't work I will call them Monday. I really need it now. I just tried to use my Expedition and the light on the shifter came on and started to blink. When it rains it pours.
Ok, somehow the AE started working. I got the following codes. The first one actually started with a B.
B1184, P1536, 0220, 1780, 0571, 0703, 0565, 0566, 0567, 0568.
I changed the VSS and the pedal sensor thing today. The last 4 numbers have something to do with the cruise control. Maybe because of the pedal thing. I cancelled them and they all came back except the first one.
Any words of wisdom?
P0220 Throttle/Pedal Position Sensor/Switch B Circuit Malfunction
P1780 Transmission Control Switch circuit is out of Self-Test Range
P1536 Ford - Parking Brake Switch Circuit Failure
P0703 Torque convertor/brake switch B circuit malfunction
P0571 Cruise control/brake switch A circuit malfunction
B1184 PAD Warning lamp circuit failure
P565 Cruise control on signal malfunction
P566 Cruise control off signal malfunction
P567 Cruise control resume signal malfunction
P568 cruise control set signal malfunction
It looks like most of it has to do with the pedal, but I put a new one in and cleared the codes but they came back. We drove the truck and it seemed fine.
