I've been lurking for a while, lots of good information here! I picked up this project this spring and have been working on just getting her going. It is a 64 that had a Y block but the PO put in a 65 352 FT and has the 4 speed granny gear transmission. The first mod I did was to put bucket seats in it. I found a nice set of 01 Explorer seats and we fab'd the seat brackets and they worked out quite nicely.
I'm really tired of shifting all the time so I was wanting to put in a C4/C6 in it. I have a FE C6 less the torque converter and flywheel stuff. At the same time my son is building a 351w street motor and I thought about putting that in this truck with a C4(I have 2 sitting in my garage) or get a C6. Would a 351/C4 be a decent combo for this truck?
The reason I'm leaning against keeping the 352 that is in there is that when I get to about 2500 RPM there seems to be some kind of knock going on. We rebuilt the heads and put everything back together and it still did it so it is something in the lower end. We didn't see anything obvious from below when we had the oil pan off.
On the 64 am I stuck with the steering wheel the way it is? Looks like it connects in the steering box so I can't change the angle or shorten it any as far as I can tell. I'd like to move it up and closer to the dash. Thinking I'd end up having to replace the whole column with an ididit type setup but hate to spend that much money on it.
I picked up an 03 CV front end that I want to put on when the weather is better.
That's it in a nutshell, thanks for the great forum!
C4 would be fine, but personally I'd go with the C6 for durability reasons. With the C4, it can be a PIA to get proper input shaft, converter, flex plate, bell housing combo to match your motor. I know most guys think they're all the same but they are not. I've been in the tranny business for 22 years and have seen more guys pull their hair out trying to figure out what to make work. That being said, if you have a complete C4 with the matching converter you're way ahead of most. Just my $.02
I've read that it takes more HP to run a C6 combined with the fact that I have a couple C4s I thought I'd go that route. I found a C6 that was on the back of a 300 and I read that that will mount up to a 351w so that is an option too. I don't really want to play around trying to find the parts, just want to hook it up and go.
Your passengers door inside trim - that rare back corner looks like it is falling off. It actually looks like it is in mid air in the process of falling off. Anyways, don't lose it. Hard pieces to come by.
Yeah, literally right after that picture was taken it fell off! Happened to the drivers side one too. Guess I should add some slightly sticky stuff to keep them in place.

Gemmer Steering Box with 1 piece shaft and worm gear or "rack" as they called on the F100..2WD and 4WD are different, just FYI. Yes my friend, you are stuck with that set up until you do a mod like a IDIDIT or something different. See my post on here 'GEMMER The Impaler" and you'll see it out in one piece (mine is 4X4). Nice truck good luck with your mods....
