Block heater??

Well all this cold weather and talk about timers got me wondering about my truck.
I can't find a plug on my truck so would I have the element installed already or was that optional? If optional what is the part number and where does the element go in the block?

It seems the cord is the option. Seen many a post where they could find the block heater but couldn't find a cord. Have to buy the cord seperately.

Did you go under and look to see if you could find it? I think it plugs up below the starter

IIRC the cord was an option you had to order.

If you have the cord it will be on the passenger side behind the bumper. Look in the opening of the bumper near the tow hook. My cord was attached to the bumper mount.

Yeah I looked for a cord and didn't find one. So then the element should already be installed from the factory and just need the cord?

Nice. That's what I'm wanting. Hate idling long and want to lower the stress on the engine with cold oil on start up.

Haha. I had forgotten how cold leather gets when it's in the teens until this morning.

Up to and including the '04 model year the cords were standard on all trucks/Excursions as they came off the line in Kentucky. Starting with the '05 and up, the dealership had to specify if they wanted a cord. I've heard the 6.7L doesn't even come with a block heater element...unless specified by the dealership. If it were me, I'd steer clear of the aftermarket stuff on Amazon & Fleabay. I'm willing to bet you'll find a pretty good deal on the Navistar version:

Navistar 1686485C91

I've heard they go for somewhere around $30 to $45 depending on where you are. That part number is the EXACT cord that was installed by Ford. Just remember, your buying a block heater cord for a school bus your using as an RV.

Kat's (linked above), Kim Hotstart, and Philips Temro are very reputable block heater companies, and I would not be surprised if International [Ford] got heaters from those companies.

Apparently they didn't bother making the block heater an option in their engine builds. It probably would have been too confusing in the ordering process. The cord however was a different thing. My truck was first purchased in Louisiana and therefore being a warmer climate the cord was not installed. I purchased the cord off of amazon the 10' version and hooked it up. It is an easy thing to do but you'll need to access the socket from under the truck.
