New guy with a new 4x4 problem!

Hi everyone. Hate to be the New Guy who jumps right in and screams "HELP!!!" but...I gotta.
OK, so it may be an old problem, but new to me.
Well drove today in snowy icy conditions and the 4x4 ran very rough. It seemed like the front tires were slipping from side to side and there was a lot of vibration.
The 4x4 light came on and such and I could tell it was engaged.
It didn't want to get back into 4x2 right away.
I am pretty clueless... I am somewhat mechanically inclined but worried I may have to punt on this. Also going to Tractor Supply after work and getting some sand tubes!!!!

Forgot to add, this is the first time I ran 4x4 since last winter.

There is nothing in your post to give even a clue.
What was the surface you drove on beside just icy and snowy?
Was the roughness present driving with the front wheel straight ahead?
Is there any vibration in 2wd after disengagement?
It could be the actuator had not fully engaged the locking sleeve or wear on that sleeve. This is based on seeing the 4x4 light on, isolating the issue to the front actuator operation.
Good luck.

It was paved roads. I thought it may have been the fact that one of the front tires is a bit worn and it was slipping. I turned onto a road that was clear and the problem persisted. I took it out of 4x4 at that time. The vibration went away after it was in 2 wheel drive. I then put it back into 4 wheel and it did the same thing...took it out and drove slow after that due to icy road!

Thanks for the reply, hope this helps a bit more.

You should do a mechanical inspection of the front drive line for worn U joints and CV axle U joints inside the rubber covers.
You have to see it if it acts up to that degree.
Good luck.

Last night driving it in 2 wheel I noticed some vibration from the front. I am thinking what ever is doing that is accentuated by the 4 wheel drive....
